MUSEEA

Theatre Costume–Abecedarium of Illusions

Our design process began at Materialmagasinet, with the aim of making the most of what already existed and reducing the need for new materials.

In this storage of old materials from museums, theatres and the opera, we searched for beautiful colours, textures and shapes: things that could be given new life as curtains, backdrops and stages for the costumes in the exhibition.

Many elements and most of the mannequins came from our earlier exhibition, Utopian Bodies, which has spent years at Materialmagasinet. With the original drawings still to hand, it was easy to see how the materials could be reimagined in a completely different context.

Reuse shaped the design from the start. Existing walls, plinths and display cases helped determine how many objects could be shown and how they could be arranged.

In the end, the exhibition became a large patchwork of old and new: colours, fabrics, structures and costumes.
